Dana Carvey: an introduction
Born in Montana and raised in California, Dana Carvey graduated from high school and San Francisco State College with a degree in communications. In 1979, he was performing at the Great American Music Hall, but it wasn’t until 1982 when he landed his first acting roles: a small part in Halloween II and a co-starring role in One of the Boys.
His breakout didn’t come until 1986 when he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live. Carvey specialized in impressions and based many of his “characters” off of people he knew: The Church Lady, Garth Algar, Hans and The Grumpy Old Man.
Over the years, he’s also done a number of political impressions: Ross Perot, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and more. Just this year, Carvey starred as President Bush in a comedy sketch called “Presidential Reunion” for ‘Funny or Die.’
Though he’s taken various amounts of time off to spend with his family and to recuperate from a botched open heart surgery, Carvey has remained in the comedic spotlight.
